Ban Thai - Sushi

I've only been to Ban Thai a few times and every time it has been exceptional good. There's not much to complain about when it comes to food and service. The decor of the restaurant is just amazing, it makes you feel like you are entering into Thailand. All the waitress and cooks are Thai so you can get real good Thai food.

The sushi has been really good, it's extremely loaded so being full can happen halfway through a roll. I have no complaints about this place. If you are looking for a more japanese or traditional sushi you may not want to come here to get some. Their sushi is more appealing if you want a yummy but very filling roll with many non traditional ingredients.

Tasty Wok

I went over to Orlando one day with my mama just to get away from Tampa and we started our day having lunch at Tasty Wok. Now this name may sound like some fast food Chinese take out but it is nothing like that at all. I actually have been here a few times starting when I was still in elementary school (so that tells you, good food stays). I don't normally go out to traditional Chinese restaurants because my mom cooks them at home so I was utterly confused on what to get. My mother, of course, was excited because it's been years since she's been in Orlando so she went ahead and ordered a beef short rib with egg noodles for herself and got me the roasted duck with egg noodles. I wasn't disappointed at all! The soup had so much flavor that I would have just chug the bowl if I could. The noodles were cooked perfectly, it was chewy and was not soggy or sticky if overcooked. The roasted duck was good but I'm not a big fan of eating duck so I separated my meat and the rest.

My mom went somewhat overboard and started looking at the menu while we were eating and wanted to order so much more stuff like sea cucumber, duck feet, tripe and the list went on. I love her!

Corn Popsicle

This isn't the normal popsicle you would pick up from the grocery store or at the convenience store in the United States. I actually saw this through icy glass doors of a freezer in a Korean store. Hint the Korean labels that I can't exactly read but I saw corn pieces and thought "what the heck, why not!". I'm pretty adventurous about trying new types of food so you may see me try some weird crazy stuff you wouldn't normally find here in the United States or especially Florida.

My first thought about this specific ice cream bar was that... there was REAL corn pieces within each bite. It was creamy and sweet but wasn't overly sweet like those ice and sugar syrup bars. It kind of reminds me of a bar of butter with random corn niblets scattered around, but thinking about eating butter in bites kind of gross me out. It's much more of a creamsicle full or corn on a stick.

I actually like this a lot, surprisingly. It's not too heavy, but it's heavy enough to satisfy anyone wanting something creamy. I really enjoy those corn pieces, even though it may sound a bit weird to have corn in your ice cream but in Asia corn is used many ways. You can find corn used in bread, sweets, meals and the list goes on. I'm glad I tried this out because I do buy these corn creamsicles on occasion and have recommended it to others.

Oh man I am finally up to date! It took me all night to make all those post without a break at all. I hope you guys do enjoy them because I got some finger cramps while typing haha just kidding! I will try my best to keep updating now that I have a blog to keep up with.

Rita's Ice

Rita's is one of my favorite quick stop to get something sweet. I usually get the kid size because that is normally more then enough for me. I absolutely love their ice and love going there to try all of the different flavors they have to offer. I LOVE getting some after coming from the beach, a great treat to cool down with!

Cake City

July 27, 2010

I have never had macarons before and I have always seen tons of pictures off of other foodies blogs that I had to make it a mission to find some. I happened to find some at Cake City which was right across from my work so I hopped on by to grab some. I ended up taking home about a dozen which I never finished and it ended up being spoiled in the car.. I haven't had any cake from Cake City but the macarons were pretty good. Coffee (brown), Raspberry (hot pink), Cosmopolitan Cocktail (light pink), Margarita (bright green), "something" Cream (offwhite) [i don't remember the name but it has a vanilla yet nutty taste to it]. My favorite would have to be the cream one, the fruity flavors weren't fooling me and so I had to pass on those. These macarons were way way too sweet for me. If they were toned down I would buy more but I think I had enough of these.

They were just the way I would imagine them to taste and feel. Crisp and crunchy on the outside, soft and moist in the inside and a sweet cream that kept the two pieces together.

Growing Tomatoes

May 2010

I don't know why but I suddenly had the urge to start my own garden during the month of May and June but suddenly the heat and worms tore my dreams apart (cries). I had tomatoes, strawberries, blueberries and a buncha herbs. It was a good start.. maybe I'll try it again one day!

Paul's Chicago Pizza

March 8, 2010

I'm not really sure what kind of pizza this is. Sorta like a white pizza with chicken, spinach, cheese, and tomatoes. It was my first "white" pizza and it was absolutely amazing! I've had food at Paul's Chicago before but I was around 12 so I don't remember much. They deliver or I hope they do because I got the pizza delivered to my work. The guy who took the order was super nice and helped us pick out what to get and how we wanted it because Gabby and I were a little clueless haha! I really enjoyed this pizza.. so much the next day I ordered the same thing! I love flat and crispy pizza than those doughy ones.

The cool thing is that this place is its near my house. PLUS PLUS PLUS! Tasted nothing like pizza hut or any of that places. It had a really unique taste that satisfied me very well.

Pho Quyen

March 8, 2010

This was one of those days I decided to take my non Asian friend to try some pho. Pho is one of my top favorite Vietnamese food in the world! It makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside haha, whenever I am upset or sick one bowl is all it takes to make me feel like myself again. Pho Quyen (Tampa)  is one of my favorite places to go to get my supply of pho whenever there's none at home. I go for the Pho Dac Biet (special) with everything in it and mmm it is amazing! The service here is one of the best and it is more multi-cultural in this restaurant than any other pho places in the area.

I go to this place so much that I probably could live there! I use to go to a different Pho Quyen down in Pinellas Park, but when this specific one opened up I never really go back.

Jade Buddha

March 8, 2010

I was one of the millions that was able to see and touch the Jade Buddha when it was touring throughout the United States. It stayed in Tampa, Florida for about 2 weeks and I was able to go see it for a few days before it continued its tour back to Asia. My mother told me about this Jade Buddha a year before it even came into town and kept telling me to keep my schedule open. She pretty much spent every day there and we even made so much desserts etc to sell at the temple and donated it to the tour for it to get home safely.

This was a pretty special event because people went crazy! I mean there are so many people who haven't had a chance to see this and now that it's home it won't be moving any time soon. This piece of jade isn't any normal piece. It weighs around 4 ton and is around 5 million dollars.

I spend a lot of time at the temple, my family is buddhist and I have grown up to become one myself. My mother is somewhat hardcore but cannot give up responsibilities to become a nun yet. I asked her why and she said that becoming one, one must give up everything on life and forget it all. Meaning that she had to let go of her family, her mother and her kids which she couldn't do so she decided to stay here with us now. I guess it makes me really appreciative of how much she cares but it hurts me inside knowing that I'm one of the reason holding her back from doing what she wants to do.

Honey Pig

June 14, 2009

I am a big fan of Korean food especially Korean bbq! I went over to Honey Pig in Lakewood because I saw the sign that flashed out at me "19.95 Unlimted Koeran BBQ per person" Of course I wanted to try that out but I knew none of the kids had money on them so I went the more caring route and got a family meal for all of us to just eat. There was still A LOT of meat to be grilled and all sorts of meat! and the total was probably around $40 or so but if I would to get that amount of meat here in Tampa... it would go past $100. So pricey but I guess thats why I love it up there!

As usual it was really good, the environment was good too. This restaurant was very busy when I was there and it was very well decorated. Nothing to be frighten about and each grill that was set at each table had it's own booth so it was nice and private.

I would have liked to have some salad to wrap but instead they serve rice wraps which I'm not too big of a fan. Also their banchan and sauces aren't that impressive. I'm a crazy fan of the ssamjang (soy bean paste sauce which consist of soy bean paste, pepper paste, garlic, sesame oil, and so on mmm good stuff)!

Jade Garden

June 12, 2009

After the dry soda experience we all got hungry and headed over to Jade Garden, well it was more like my cousin drove us over to this place. I didn't really expected much because I wasn't really craving for any food but we happened to just ordered food and managed to get 3 dishes for 4 people which was more then enough!

We got honey glazed prawns and walnuts, black bean sauce crabs and sweet and sour pork. There was so much food that we were shoving everything in our mouths at the end of our meal. The food was good, the crab was alright because it was so damn pricey! My favorite would have to be those honey glazed prawns. They are so amazing that I think of them till this day.. They made it so perfect that I will never forget how crispy yet sweet those prawns were. OH MAN! I am still trying to find a place that can make it like Jade Garden but my mission has not been successful at all.. I won't stop though!

This place was clean and had great service. We ate and left with no problems at all and the food servings were very generous. White rice and soup was also served and it didn't taste like those take out soups that are filled with color dye and cornstarch.

Dry Soda

June 12, 2009

My cousin and I were watching T.V one night and I believe it was on the food channel or something and Dry Soda appeared on the screen. It so happens that they were located in Seattle so we took a day to go check this place out and see what this dry soda was all about. It was surprising ... interesting. It kind of reminds me of wine that accompanies food. This was pretty much how this lightly flavored carbonated soda worked. There's 7 different flavors and each one matches well with certain proteins and very well I must say. It wasn't amazing to drink alone, but my favorite one would have to be Vanilla Bean. The cool thing was that when we first entered the building we had no clue what we were going to be doing. It so happens that you get to sit there chat and try all the different flavors to see which one you like. There's also cards that shows you which flavor dry soda matches with what food.

I would have to say it was a really fun and interesting experience. It's not something I would buy all the time but if I had a chance and had extra money laying around I would buy it for fun.

Boxed Sushi.. Is it safe?

June 8, 2009

This picture was taken at Uwajimaya in Seattle. I have always avoided any sushi that is contained in a box and left out in those half open fridges. Well I had questioned myself, Was it that bad to eat? I would have to guess it all depends on where you get it. There are certainly places you would want to avoid like places that are slow and doesn't normally sell sushi. Let's say we were in Japan or any of those Asian countries, it is typically normal to have all certain types of food in the fridges of gas stations and those convenience stores, sushi, bento boxes, rice balls, soups and so on. They always look so good too, like you just ordered it from a restaurant! There are also some SOME stores in America but it has to be those big and I  mean BIG Asian markets to have some delicious looking fridge food!

I did happen to come across a place in America that should have not offer sushi at all... I feared for my life.

Pike Place Market

June 8, 2009

This is a place you have to visit once if you are in Seattle. I am from that area and I love going back, I really do miss it and sometimes wish to move back but I have already settle my life for now somewhere else. Until I am ready I might move back or even to a new place that I may fall in love with but Seattle is a place I love so much right now. Well Pike Place seems to be such a popular place that it's featured on t.v shows and has pictures taken there so many times it's even more popular then the space needle!

I got to walk around the area just to sight-see and I took everything in, it's just so fresh up north!

I didn't get to explore because I wasn't there by myself but if I was I probably spend a few hours just walking around this place. Every crack and corner would be explored by me!

Pine Tree Karaoke Cafe A.K.A. One Family Korean Restaurant

May 14, 2009

WOW this is the most difficult place to find, online and in real life. I happened to run across this restaurant while I was shopping at S 1 Mart and noticed there was a Korean restaurant attached to the side of this warehouse looking market. My first impression was that this restaurant was such a cute and Korean-like place with all of the booths made of wood and a karaoke system ready for the night shifts. The food is actually pretty good, I've been to this place twice. If the location wasn't so awkward and hidden I might come here often to eat. The employees here are all somehow related so it brings in a more homey environment when you are eating, pretty much like you are those extra actors in a Korean drama or movie just eating, minding your own business.

Bibimbap is one of my favorite laziest meal ever! I make it at home when I just give up on trying to do anything and pile everything in a bowl some pepper paste, sesame oil and mix it up with my long Korean spoon haha! I love Dolsot Bibimbap (the one in the black bowl) because the rice gets crispy due to how hot the stone bowl is. I also had galbi here some other time and it was very yummy but when is galbi not good?! If so you  must be doing something terribly wrong! I also love all their banchan  (side dishes served with any  Korean meal). There isn't a lot compared to the Korean restaurant down the road Rice but they are very good. One of my favorite side dish from Han Ga Jok would be seasoned sesame leaves. It was the first time I've had it there and I keep thinking of it!!

If you can find it, it is worth the visit because it is such a unique little restaurant.

Ha Long Bay

April 28, 2009

Ha Long Bay is actually a pretty new Dim Sum/Chinese restaurant that has opened up down in south Pinellas. It is surrounded with neighboring Asian markets and restaurants in the same plaza. It is a very big place that is wide and open, meaning no one will be running into those carts! I first went there with my family wondering how it would be compared to one of my top favorite dim sum restaurant TC Choy in Tampa. To my expectation I still enjoy TC Choy better but this is a very nice place to go to if you aren't picky with dumplings like I am. The price is a bit cheaper then TC Choy, but not so much if you are willing to put in a few coins for better dim sum. The food was decent but hasn't won me over, I go here only if I am in the area and I really want dim sum.

DeLosa's Pizza

April 25, 2009

This was one of those nights everyone got hungry on a beach we didn't really  mean to go to. We just so happened to spot this pizza shop with a huge line and decided to check it out. We ended up at this place called DeLosa's Pizza. I didn't really pay much attention to anything that was happening that night because it was so busy but my friend got some pizza and some wings we all shared with each other. I can't remember if it was amazing or not, but I'm sure it was good enough for us to line up and eat it like hell broke loose. I think the wings were really hot though...

I can't remember much about the food because it was such a busy day. I had a big group of friends that I went to St. Petersburg for HIN (Hot Import Night) but it didn't seem that special and it was outside so we all just ended watching the drifting session, took some pictures and then leave to go to an arcade on the beach.

I was one of those typical photographer... I stood on those poles about 3 feet off the ground trying to take pics over the fence haha!!

Sushi Spot

April 24, 2009

I would have to say Sushi Spot is one of my favorite sushi restaurant and one I visit over and over the most. Their rolls are amazing and huge which is always a big plus and everyone is very friendly here. I first started coming here because it was a friend's friend restaurant and so after that it was just a place I constantly go to in the past few years. I will have to say their food hasn't been as great as in the past but it still is good enough to gather friends and eat out here. The restaurant is pretty big, one side is a room for either over crowding or for a large party. The other side consists of tables, lounges, t.v.s and also the sushi bar. Every waitresses I have had has always been really nice and quick with service and the sushi chefs are nice (but I do prefer the chefs in the past).

I use to be in love with the Sexy Suzie which contains spicy octopus, conch, crab stick, crawfish, smelt roe, crunch, carrot, cucumber, tempura, topped with spicy mayo, wasabi sauce, eel sauce and fish eggs (picture above).  I could never finish this alone because of how much is in one serving but it is also $13 for special rolls and the price could get higher with certain ingredients. I now get soba noodle soup which is just amazing! I have taken a somewhat healthier route and have been getting this delicious bowl of soba and tempura shrimps which is around $12 so everything would normally be around the same price range.

Yoyo Sushi

April 24, 2009

Yoyo Sushi was recommended by a friend and I wasn't disappointed. This place consist of korean and japanese food locked away behind buildings and hotels so it was a difficult place to find. The food is indeed very delicious and it all looked so pretty.

I ended up sharing a roll that consisted of eel and avocado with a friend and my other friend got the chef's special which consisted a variety of fish and eel. As you can see from the picture the food was fresh and delicate. I would eat at Yoyo's more often but the location is out of the way for me, but if I am in the area it is a place to go! To end off our meal we picked to have some yummy green tea ice cream with a chocolate pocky included.

The restaurant is clean and very modern compared to traditional places. The items on the menu is also reasonable priced, sometimes a little more pricier then other places, but the dishes are very pleasing.

Yotopia Frozen Yogurt

April 23, 2009

HMMM do I have a history with Yotopia! I actually work here and have been working here for a year now. This was taken before I started working so I'll tell you about my experience when I first started coming here. Back in Composition I, those freshman days in college I did a essay about frozen yogurts. I started to get obsessed with it because I have never tried frozen yogurt due to the fact there's no where that sells any. I searched like crazy and gave up until one day I ate at the Thai place next door and came out to check this place out for some dessert and fell in love. The frozen yogurt here is light, icy and tarty which made me love! I loved it so much that I applied for a job at Yotopia for the heck of it and got it. Now there are many frozen yogurt parlors everywhere but none of them I really like because they are so creamy and concentrated in flavor. If I wanted something like ice cream I would just buy ice cream, maybe thats why I prefer the icy and tartiness of Yotopia's frozen Yogurt.

Crispers

April 23, 2009

One of my favorite place to go eat when I was a senior in high school and a freshman in college was at Crispers. Many call it a similar version to Panera Bread. I like this certain one I go to because it's down the street from me and it is also near to Safety Harbor pier which offers a very peaceful environment. I would often come here to eat alone or bring friends along and finish up the day with a walk on the pier and just observe other people fishing and so on.

In this specific picture I got the Caribbean Chicken Flatbread which is one of my favorites! They use to have the half and half which you get to pick half of a sandwich or flatbread and soup or salad, etc but they took it down and put it back up so I'm not sure if it's still there.

The first time I visited this restaurant I was honestly a little confused. I wasn't sure if I was supposed to get seated or line up but then I figured it out after watching a couple of people before me. There are little menus you can pick up and look at or you can look up at the boards on the wall. You walk down this line to the register, you order and pay then they hand you a number and a cup and you would go get your drink, sit down and wait for your food, but before getting all cozy you must clip up that number up at your table for the server to find you.

The food here is really simple, they serve sandwiches, flatbread, soup, salads, sweets and drinks. I think most of their food is pretty darn good but it's not the cheapest thing ever, but is pretty close to cheap. It took me awhile to find my favorite dishes, but I've tried many things on their menu and I'm not very disappointed besides some of the soup which weren't on the same level as my taste buds.

Acropolis

September 24, 2009

For a friend's birthday we had dinner at Acropolis in Ybor, Tampa. Dinner consisted of two Asian girl (including myself) and one Caucasian girl. Being one of the two girls whom has never been to a legit Greek restaurant I must say it was very interesting. First thing I noticed walking in was all the napkin on the ground, assuming it was some sort of event that probably went on I didn't really question much about it. We all had no clue what to get so our wonderful waitress was such an amazing help! She gave us all kind of suggestions but we picked one item that we could all share and also have a variety to taste test.

We got the Mixed Grill which consisted of chicken, beef, kefte, and souvlaki. This also included pita and greek fries for a total of $27. We also ended her birthday with some sweets and I must say they have some to die for desserts! THEN the napkins are whooped out and thrown everywhere for the birthday song which was really cool and fun. We had much more then we could eat so this is def a filling dish for a group of people.
